Yes, absolutely no problem. Modern heat pumps operate efficiently down to −15°C. In Lisbon and the region, where temperatures rarely drop below 5°C, performance is excellent throughout winter. The COP (efficiency) drops slightly in cold weather but always stays above 2.5.
It depends on the radiator type. Low-temperature models (aluminium, large towel rails) are compatible. Old cast-iron radiators require checking — the pump operates at lower temperatures than gas boilers. We always assess compatibility during the free survey.
For replacing a boiler with an air-source heat pump, installation is relatively straightforward: boiler removal, outdoor unit installation (like air conditioning), hot water cylinder installation and connections. Typically 2 to 3 days. No building works required.
On average, between 5 and 7 years for a boiler replacement installation, and less than 4 years when combined with solar panels. The exact payback is calculated in the proposal, based on your current gas and electricity consumption.
COP (Coefficient of Performance) is the measure of heat pump efficiency. A COP of 4 means that for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed, the pump produces 4 kWh of heat. The higher the COP, the lower your electricity bill. Under normal Lisbon conditions, COP ranges between 3 and 5.
Yes, we recommend annual maintenance: refrigerant charge check, outdoor evaporator cleaning, electrical and hydraulic connection checks and actual COP verification. Without maintenance, efficiency degrades gradually. We have annual maintenance contracts available.
Yes. Portugal has energy efficiency support programmes that can co-fund part of the investment. Available programmes vary — we always inform you of current options during the survey and help with the necessary documentation.
It is significantly quieter than a gas boiler and comparable to a modern air conditioner. The outdoor unit typically operates between 40 and 55 dB(A) — similar to normal conversation noise. The interior of your home has no visible or audible unit, unless you use fan-coils.
